Rich Search

This implementation provides users with the ability to navigate, search and discover data within a website, especially larger websites. Users can build their search queries as they go, refining or expanding the current query, with results automatically reflecting the current query.

Essentially this search tool is equiavelent to the functions delivered by a website search engine (i.e. keyword text pattern matching) combined with categorical searching (which use drill down filtering). As such it never offers categories that would lead to empty search results.

Reasons to use this over standard search features?

  • Users need to filter content using multiple categories in the search at the same time
  • Users want to combine text searches, category term filtering, and other search criteria
  • Users don't know precisely what they can find on your site, or what to search for, so it prompts them
  • Prompt or hint to users to look at related content they might not have thought of looking for, but that could be of interest to them
  • Show users what subject areas are the most comprehensive on your site
  • Used to discover hidden relationships or trends between all the content within your site
  • Your site has too much content for it to be displayed through fixed navigational structures, but you still want it to be navigable
  • To not allow users to get to any empty result sets when searching your site (always find a result)
  • Advanced and complex search forms are not fun to use
